Apple Store for Malaysia Launches!

Finally, Malaysia gets their own Apple Online Store. While apple.com.my goes to a blank page for some reason, Malaysian Mac heads have had to put up with www.apple.com/my for quite some time now, with no proper online store in sight. Now, at least, the problem’s been solved. Check out the Malaysian Apple Online Store here.

To commemorate the ‘grand opening’, any Mac or iPod orders made from the new Malaysia Apple Online Store will get a (pretty fugly, IMHO) limited edition tee. Oh well, free is free, right?

OpenOffice 3.0 Goes Live

Fans of the free office apps suite, OpenOffice, will be glad to know that version 3.0 is already out the door, and is available for download.

Among the more notable improvements for OpenOffice 3.0 include:

  • Out-of-the-box import filters for the latest Microsoft Office file formats, enabling OpenOffice 3.0 to read documents saved with Microsoft Office 2007 or 2008 in .docx, .xlsx and .pptx
  • The ability to read and write documents in standardized OpenDocument Format (ODF) 1.2.
  • Native compatibility with the Mac OS X platform. MacHeads rejoice!

Handheld Shooters

Word from the Giz is that Canon USA just announced their PowerShot G10, successor to the now seriously old G9. Unsurprisingly, the spec list is rather substantial; DIGIC 4 processor, 28mm wide-angle lens, RAW mode, 5x optical zoom, 14.7 megapixels and a 3-inch LCD. As of now, still no official word from Canon Singapore, but the US release lists the G10 as having a MSRP of about US$499.

On a more personal level, I’m on the hunt for a new digital camera, but contemplating between going for a regular compact, or right on to a proper DSLR. Either that, or go for something in between, like the G10, or even Panasonic’s tasty Lumix LX3. Given that i’m probably going to restrict the budget to give or take S$1000, my options arent going to be very extensive. Food for thought, no?
